Bayern Munich Defender Ito Undergoes Second Surgery
Ito's Recurring Knee Injury Requires Additional Surgical Intervention
Bayern Munich defender Hiroki Ito has undergone a second surgery on his right knee, the club announced on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Japan international had initially undergone surgery in September 2022 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). However, the club revealed that Ito experienced "complications" during his rehabilitation, necessitating a further operation.
Ito's Injury History and Recovery Timeline
Ito suffered the initial ACL injury during Bayern Munich's pre-season friendly against Manchester City in July 2022. He underwent surgery shortly after and was expected to be out for around six to nine months. However, his rehabilitation was interrupted by the aforementioned complications, which have now required a second surgical intervention.
The club has not provided a specific timeline for Ito's return, but he is likely to be out for an extended period. The defender has been a regular member of the Bayern Munich squad since joining from Stuttgart in 2021, making 35 appearances in all competitions.
Bayern Munich's Defensive Options
With Ito out injured, Bayern Munich will have to rely on other players to fill the void at right-back. Benjamin Pavard is the most likely candidate to start in Ito's absence, while Josip Stanišić and Noussair Mazraoui can also play in that position.
The club may also consider signing a new right-back in the January transfer window to provide additional cover. Bayern Munich has been linked with several players, including Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan and Pedro Porro of Sporting CP.
