Carolabrücke: Independent Statement on Recent Press Coverage
Press Release by Saxon State Office for Monument Preservation
Dresden, 31 January 2023
With regard to the press coverage regarding the static and dynamic measurements carried out on the Carola Bridge, the Saxon State Office for Monument Preservation would like to issue the following statement:
Static Measurements
The static measurement determined the current loads acting on the bridge and compared them with the loads assumed in the planning. A comparison of the bridge's current condition with its condition in 2018 showed no significant changes. The load-bearing capacity of the bridge is therefore still guaranteed.
Dynamic Measurements
The dynamic measurements were carried out to investigate the bridge's vibration behavior under pedestrian loads. The results showed that the bridge vibrates more than expected under certain types of pedestrian loads, such as running or jumping. However, the vibrations are still within the permissible limits and do not pose a safety risk.
Further Investigations
In order to further analyze the vibration behavior of the bridge, a monitoring system will be installed. This system will continuously record the bridge’s vibrations and provide data for further evaluation.
Assessment
Based on the results of the static and dynamic measurements, the Saxon State Office for Monument Preservation assesses the Carola Bridge as structurally sound and safe to use. The bridge will continue to be monitored as part of the regular maintenance and inspection program.
