Edinburgh police confirm pedestrian struck by vehicle amid reports of 'severed head'
Police in Edinburgh have confirmed that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in the city center on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred on Princes Street, near the junction with Hanover Street, at around 6:30pm.
The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
"We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have captured footage of the incident on their mobile phone or dashcam."
The road was closed for several hours while police investigated the scene.
Reports on social media suggested that the pedestrian's head had been severed in the collision.
However, police have not confirmed this information.
The incident is the latest in a series of fatal road accidents in Edinburgh in recent months.
In December, a cyclist was killed in a collision with a lorry on the city's Queensferry Road.
And in January, a pedestrian was killed in a collision with a car on the city's Gorgie Road.
Police are urging drivers to take extra care when driving in the city center.
