Police Investigate Manslaughter After Cannabis Explosion

On Tuesday, 25th October 2022, an explosion occurred in a residential property in Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne, resulting in the tragic death of one individual.

Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 11:30 am, where they found a substantial fire and structural damage to the property. Firefighters extinguished the blaze; however, one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Northumbria Police launched an investigation into the incident and arrested two men, aged 32 and 44, on suspicion of manslaughter. Both suspects have been released under investigation pending further inquiries.

Cannabis Cultivation Suspected

Early indications suggest that the explosion may have been caused by a cannabis cultivation operation within the property. Specialist officers from Northumbria Police are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the explosion and the cause of the fire.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. Officers are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity at the property in the lead-up to the explosion.
