Germany: Union calls deportation promises from the Chancellor "sheer show"
Context
Even before the federal-state summit on migration, Union politicians have sharply criticized the announcements by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on stricter deportations. The chairman of the CSU regional group in the Bundestag, Alexander Dobrindt, declared the program to be "pure eyewash" on Monday.
Criticism
Dobrindt told the newspapers of the Funke media group: "The Chancellor's announcements are not worth the paper they are written on." There are "no noticeable new initiatives" to reduce irregular migration and to enforce deportations more effectively. "The deportations that are already possible today under the current legal situation are simply not being carried out."
The CSU politician demanded that the federal government should "finally stop the failed asylum policy of the past few years" and consistently implement the decisions of the EU summit from June.
Federal-state summit
Representatives of the federal and state governments meet on Thursday for a summit on migration. According to the draft resolutions, which are available to the German Press Agency, the meeting is intended to "make further progress in combating illegal migration and improving return management".
