Gushue Tops Carruthers in Opening Draw at Grand Slam Curling Event
Brad Gushue Gets Draw of Co-op Canadian Open
Brad Gushue, the reigning Olympic and world champion, got off to a winning start at the Grand Slam of Curling's Co-op Canadian Open on Wednesday, defeating John Carruthers 6-3 in the opening draw at the Enmax Centre.
Gushue, who is skipping for Team Canada this week, stole a deuce in the second end and never trailed in the match. The Newfoundland and Labrador native made a clutch double takeout in the eighth end to force Carruthers to draw for one, and then sealed the victory with a steal of one in the ninth.
Gushue Finishes Strong
"I think we played pretty well," said Gushue. "We made a few mistakes, but we made some big shots when we needed to."
Team Gushue will be back in action on Thursday afternoon when they take on Matt Dunstone's Team Wild Card.
