Wayne Rooney's Emotional Old Trafford Homecoming
Wayne Rooney, Manchester United's all-time top scorer, has opened up about his "amazing" return to Old Trafford as manager of Derby County in the FA Cup fifth round. Despite United's 3-0 victory, Rooney was warmly welcomed by the home fans, who chanted his name throughout the match.
Rooney admitted that he didn't expect such a positive reception, saying: "I didn't know what to expect, to be honest. I was a bit nervous, but the reception I got was amazing."
Rooney's United Legacy
Rooney spent 13 seasons at United, winning five Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup, and three League Cups. He is the club's all-time leading scorer with 253 goals.
After leaving United in 2017, Rooney had spells at Everton and D.C. United before returning to England to manage Derby County in 2020.
Derby's FA Cup Run
Derby County, currently playing in the third tier of English football, have enjoyed a memorable FA Cup run this season. They knocked out Premier League sides West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion before facing Manchester United.
Although they lost 3-0, Rooney was proud of his team's performance. He said: "I'm really proud of the players. They gave everything and played really well."
Rooney's Future
Rooney has been linked with the vacant managerial position at Burnley, but he insists that he is focused on Derby County for now.
He said: "I'm not thinking about anything else. I'm just focused on Derby County and trying to keep us in this division."
