Nwabali Shares His Top 5 Nigerian Football Legends
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, has revealed his top five greatest Nigerian players of all time, with Segun Odegbami topping the list.
Odegbami was a member of the Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil, and he also represented Nigeria at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
Shorunmu, who was capped 39 times by Nigeria, said that Odegbami was the most skilful player he had ever seen.
"He was a joy to watch," Shorunmu said. "He could do things with the ball that other players could only dream of."
Shorunmu's other four selections were Nwankwo Kanu, Jay-Jay Okocha, Sunday Oliseh, and Rashidi Yekini.
Kanu was a two-time African Footballer of the Year, and he won the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995.
Okocha was a gifted playmaker who was known for his dribbling skills and long-range goals.
Oliseh was a tough-tackling midfielder who was a key member of the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations title.
Yekini was a prolific goalscorer who was the all-time leading scorer for the Super Eagles.
Shorunmu said that it was difficult to choose just five players, but he believes that these five are the greatest Nigerian players of all time.
"They are all legends of the game," Shorunmu said. "They have all made a significant contribution to Nigerian football."
