Thailand Airports to Implement Biometric Facial Recognition System
Starting November 1st, 2024
Bangkok, Thailand - Thailand's Airports of Thailand (AOT) has announced plans to implement a biometric facial recognition system at all of its airports, including Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Hat Yai.
Enhanced Security and Efficiency
The new system aims to enhance security and streamline passenger processing. According to AOT, the facial recognition technology will be used to verify passengers' identities at check-in counters, security checkpoints, and boarding gates.
This is expected to reduce wait times, improve passenger flow, and deter identity theft, making the airport experience more efficient and secure.
Privacy and Data Protection
AOT has emphasized that passenger privacy and data protection are paramount considerations in the implementation of the facial recognition system. The collected biometric data will be stored securely and used solely for identification purposes.
Passengers who do not wish to use the facial recognition system will be provided with alternative methods of identity verification.
Phased Implementation
The biometric facial recognition system will be implemented in phases, starting with Suvarnabhumi Airport on November 1st, 2024. The remaining airports will follow suit in the coming months.
AOT is working closely with relevant stakeholders, including airlines, immigration authorities, and security agencies, to ensure a smooth and successful implementation.
Benefits for Passengers
The implementation of the biometric facial recognition system is expected to bring several benefits to passengers, including:
- Reduced wait times
- Improved passenger flow
- Enhanced security
- Deterrence of identity theft
- Simplified travel experience
The new system is part of AOT's ongoing efforts to modernize Thailand's airports and provide a seamless travel experience for passengers.
