Tragedy as two trains collide in Berkshire
Ufton Nervet is shocked by the train crash that occurred on Tuesday morning, killing dozens of people and injuring many more.
The incident happened at around 6:30am GMT when a Great Western Railway train from London Paddington to Plymouth collided with a CrossCountry train from Birmingham New Street to Southampton Central at the village of Ufton Nervet in Berkshire. The cause of the accident is not yet known, but the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is investigating.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene and the injured were taken to local hospitals. The Great Western Railway train was carrying around 250 passengers and the CrossCountry train was carrying around 150 passengers. It is believed that many of the passengers were commuters on their way to work.
The Prime Minister has expressed his condolences to the victims and their families. He said: "This is a tragic day for our country. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. I would like to thank the emergency services for their hard work in responding to this incident."
The RAIB is now investigating the cause of the accident. The investigation is expected to take several months.
