West Indies vs England: Hosts race to victory in first ODI
West Indies seal dramatic last-ball win in first ODI against England
The West Indies secured a thrilling one-wicket victory over England in the first One-Day International (ODI) at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Saturday. Chasing a modest target of 232, the hosts rode on a brilliant century from opener Shai Hope (110) to cross the line with just one ball to spare.
England, who were put into bat first, were bowled out for 231 in 49 overs. Jason Roy (42) and Phil Salt (36) provided a solid start, but the middle order failed to capitalize on the platform.
West Indies bowlers Alzarri Joseph (3/44) and Jayden Seales (3/55) shared six wickets between them to restrict England.
Hope anchors West Indies chase with a masterful century
In reply, the West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals but Hope held firm, anchoring the chase with a composed 110 off 135 balls.
Hope received support from Rovman Powell (31) and Akeal Hosein (34), who contributed valuable cameos down the order.
As the match reached its climax, the West Indies needed 10 runs from the final over. Romario Shepherd (11 not out) hit a boundary and a six off the first two balls to seal a memorable victory for the hosts.
England rue missed opportunities
England will be disappointed with the result, having failed to capitalize on their strong start with the bat.
Skipper Jos Buttler (24) and Ben Stokes (26) got starts but failed to convert them into big scores.
The visitors' bowlers also failed to make early inroads, allowing Hope to settle in and dominate the chase.
The second ODI between the two sides will be played at the same venue on Wednesday, February 22.
