Yankees' Cashman Explains Why Jasson Dominguez Wasn't Promoted Amid Verdugo Struggles

Domínguez Has Yet to Make His MLB Debut

Despite the struggles of Alex Verdugo in center field for the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that top prospect Jasson Domínguez will not be promoted to the major leagues anytime soon. Domínguez, 19, is one of the most highly touted prospects in baseball, but Cashman said that he still needs more time to develop in the minor leagues.

"Jasson is a special talent, but he's still only 19 years old," Cashman said. "We want to make sure that he's ready for the major leagues before we bring him up. We don't want to rush him and risk stunting his development."

Domínguez Is Hitting .324 in Triple-A

Domínguez is currently hitting .324 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in 65 games for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate. He has also stolen 20 bases. Cashman said that Domínguez's performance in Triple-A has been impressive, but he still needs to work on some things before he's ready for the majors.

"Jasson has made a lot of progress this year, but he still needs to improve his plate discipline and his defense," Cashman said. "We want to make sure that he's well-rounded before we bring him up to the majors."

Verdugo Has Struggled in Center Field

Verdugo, who was acquired by the Red Sox from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Mookie Betts trade, has struggled in center field this season. He has made several errors and has not been as productive at the plate as the Red Sox had hoped. Cashman said that he is aware of Verdugo's struggles, but he does not believe that it is a reason to promote Domínguez to the majors.

"We're not going to rush Jasson just because Verdugo is struggling," Cashman said. "We're going to let Jasson develop at his own pace. We believe that he has the potential to be a special player, and we want to make sure that he's ready for the major leagues when he gets here."
