Volcano erupts on Lembata Island in East Nusa Tenggara

Eruption sends ash 4 kilometers into the sky

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano on Lembata Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, erupted on Sunday, spewing a giant column of ash 4 kilometers into the sky.

The eruption, which began at 10:46 a.m. local time, sent ash and debris raining down on nearby villages.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that no injuries or deaths have been reported so far, but the eruption has caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.

The BNPB has issued a warning to residents living near the volcano to be prepared for further eruptions and to evacuate if necessary.

The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) has issued a Volcanic Ash Advisory for the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

The VAAC has warned that the ash cloud from the eruption is moving towards the northeast and could affect air travel in the region.

Airlines have been advised to avoid flying through the ash cloud, as it can damage aircraft engines.
